Overview of Bertha's Mission
Bertha's Mission was established September 17, 2013 in Bedford, Indiana. Their mission is "To gradually decrease the statistical data on hunger within the community through empowerment, addressing the basic life skills of everyday living, and feeding the hungry, elderly, low income, disabled or lonely citizens of Lawrence County and surrounding counties for free or at a reduced price based on their income."

Learning Objectives

Bookkeeping: I learned how to use a common bookkeeping site called QuickBooks.

Networking: I talked to other volunteers, and sponsors, and made new partnerships.

Grant Writing: I learned the process/steps of grant writing and am still learning this unique writing technique.

Fundraising/Quality Development: I learned the best times to ask for donations and different ways to raise money for a non-profit.

Communication: I strengthen my talking and writing in a professional setting.
Personal Development
During my internship, I developed more of my creative, teamwork, and healthcare skills. I also learned about bookkeeping, event planning, customer service, and grants while interning at Bertha's Mission. Everyone helped coordinate new fundraisers, plan galas, write grant proposals, and meet Lawrence County's needs. Areas for growth are resolving customer problems, writing grant proposals, and marketing.
Academic Connections
The courses that were similar to tasks at my internship were public health, finance & accounting, marketing, leadership & resolving disputes, and health IT management & policy. I think the courses helped me understand the tasks at hand. The classes can help you with various jobs not just healthcare-related. I recommend improving your knowledge in these classes.
